Majorca has been inhabited since ancient times. Burial chambers and traces of habitation from the Paleolithic period have been discovered. Majorca was occupied by the Romans in 123 BC under Quintus Caecilius Metellus. It flowered under Roman rule, during which time the towns of Pollentia (modern Alcúdia), and Palmaria (Palma) were founded. The local economy was largely involved in Olive cultivation, vines, and salt mining. Majorcan soldiers were highly valued in the Roman legions for their skills with the sling.
The capital of Majorca, Palma, was founded as a Roman camp known as Palmaria on the ruins of a Talaiotic settlement. The turbulent history of Palma saw it subject to several Vandal sackings at the end of the Roman Empire. Palma was later reconquered by the Byzantines, colonised by the Moors, and ultimately established by James I of Aragon. In 1983, Palma was adopted as the capital of the Balearic Islands.
Majorca has two mountainous regions each of about 70 km in length. These occupy the north-western (Serra de Tramuntana) and eastern thirds of the island. The highest peak on Majorca is Puig Major in the Serra de Tramuntana. The northeast coast comprises two sweeping bays: the Badia de Pollença and the larger Badia d'Alcúdia. The northern coast is rugged with cliffs. The central zone extending from Palma is a flat fertile plain known as Es Pla.
The Majorcan climate is Mediterranean, with much higher precipitation in the Serra de Tramuntana. Summers are hot in the plains and winters mild, getting colder in the Tramuntana range; however in this part of the island brief episodes of snow during the winter are not unknown.
Majorca is surrounded by two uninhabited small islands: Cabrera, southeast of Palma, and Dragonera, to the west of Palma.
